Pilotage dates back to when powered flight began, it's fairly accurate in good weather, and sadly, most pilots have forgoten this wonderfull tool.
Mostly, it involves looking for landmarks on the ground and on your map, or Chart. An example of a landmark would be, say, maybey a road crossing a river, with a powerline nearby, or maybe a town. Then you look on your chart and find where the heck you are.
Navigation isn't finding your way around, its just making sure you don't get lost. :)

for most recreational fliers it would be useful but outdated while flying over small lakes and large mases of area.

the Spirate of St Luis or whatever it was used "dead rekoning". I think its called that because if your calculations are off, you are dead. Or maybe it means "dead on".
